Twila "Big T" Smith
Blues, Jazz & Neo Soul Performing Artist

Twila "Big T" Smith was born and raised in southern California. She grew up performing in various groups, choirs, and choruses including a touring English handbell choir out of Los Angeles, The University Bell Ringers. She studied music theory under the late Genevieve Lewis and Mistress Johanna Hodges both of Long Beach, CA. Her parents facilitated a love of music, an understanding of cadence, and their importance in daily life.

Twila learned to appreciate music while performing with the Lynwood Academy Lynaires (Lynwood, CA) under the direction of the late Richard Jackson and with the Oakwood College Aeolians (Huntsville, AL) under the direction of Dr. Ricky Little; where she earned her first degree. She then attended Howard University (Washington, DC) to study Occupational Therapy. She returned to California to practice Occupational Therapy. While there she volunteered to teach music theory, directed the children's choir at her church, co-directed the University Bell Ringers, and performed with her father's band, Jimmie Smith & Co. and with her sisters singing jazz standards, gospel, spirituals, and sacred music.

For 16 years Twila made DC her home. Upon her return, she performed as a choral member and cantor for the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Washington, DC. Twila has shared the stage with artist such as Ray Brooks and Kindred & the Family Soul.  She has worked with artist from varying labels including BRAAT Music Group, Universal Music Group, etc.  She has kept herself busy singing background vocals, composing vocal arrangements, consulting in studio sessions, and vocal coaching.  

Twila currently resides in the High Desert of Southern California. She performs as a solo artist specializing in blues, jazz, and neo-soul. She also performs as a member of The Upton Blues Band in the DMV area and with Jimmie Smith & Co. On the west coast.
